A Love Poem For Devean George

The Kidd Trade nixed by George, by George.  George Please, Please!!! don’t allow this trade to go through ever.  And on this Valentine’s Day I would like to tell everyone who I love, so I made a love poem.  Enjoy.

Devean George I Love You

Devean George I love you,
there is no other way to say,
the feelings I have for you,
on this our valentine’s day.
While others drink in heated passion,
and burn their shallow lusts too fast,
We defy all of culture’s trendy fashions
with a gentle tickle of love that lasts.
The secret is my admiration,
for a city you helped save,
The epic tale of a terrified nation
where one man steps up to block its grave.
Yes our love goes beyond the flesh,
the 6 foot 8 frame and piercing eyes,
the gazelle like motion and muscular chest,
It is your will that breaks and ties.
The will pictured in heroic dreams,
And it is that will I emphasize,
The one in which you saved my team,
And won my love as your prize.

The game comes fast

unforgiven for its past

sliding into foul ground

and catching it like you asked

Don’t pretend to hate me

I’m what you desire to be

I’m what you dream, dripped in

failure and glory,

Would I play the game

without the money, without the fame

It’s something you’ll never know

You give me both and on I hold.

Late nights at the gym

The littlest things lose or win

One mistake, one sin is

magnified by ten.

Not scared of heights

I crave the glory I crave the right

to walk in like a Gladiator to

these coliseum nights

And show these bloodlust lives

the past, packaged in disguise

The games of old played

to satisfy their eyes.

All The Money I Would Have Spent

The A-Rod / Chan Ho Park Texas Ranger Era has left this organization with the big money spending mantra of “player specific.”  Kevin Millwood 5 years $60 million and Micheal Young 5 years $88 million are two of those player specific guys.  I like those signings, I like those players even if they are not playing up to their capabilities this year.

This offseason Barry Zito and Dice-K were players the Rangers had targeted as well.  And we were told that the Rangers put up big money to try and address their pitching weaknesses with a $27 million bid for Dice-K and about $100 million contract for Zito.  Those figures seemed reasonable to me and showed me they were really trying to improve their pitching without giving an absolutely horrible contract to someone.

But I have a real problem with what just happened yesterday.  The best high school pitcher and some would argue the best pitcher in the draft fell to us at our second pick of the first round, the #24 pick, and we didn’t draft him.  Why?  He’s going to be asking for over $7 million dollars and maybe even a big league contract.  Wow!  So you were willing to spend $27 million dollars to talk to Dice-K and $100 million to land Mr. Zito, but not 8 or 9 million to get what is considered to be at least one of the top 4 overall players in this year’s draft.  And to get him at #24 no less after you had already drafted another highly regarded power pitcher in Blake Beaven.

You amaze me Mr. Hicks.  All that money you would have spent if the other teams hadn’t gone so crazy.  Why is it we just can’t catch a break and be in a position to spend that money you say your so willing to spend?  Why is it you passed on Rick Porcello?  I wouldn’t mind if you didn’t even sign him, just give yourselves the chance.  If he is too adament in the negotiations that he wants a big league contract, which would shorten his years in the minors to a maximum of 3, you let him go to college and you get an extra first round pick in next years draft for not signing him.  If an extra 1 or 2 million dollars changes his mind, then you get a top pitching talent in your system.  If he is successful, you get a number 1 or 2 starter for 6 major league seasons.  Isn’t that worth the $10 million risk?  But if you had drafted him you might actually would have had to spend that $10 million.  Bet you were hoping another team would step up before you picked and draft him.  Then JD could have said “Well, Mr. Hicks gave us the ok to spend above slot, and we were willing to make a big splash it just didn’t work out for us.”

All this has made me want to express my dismay creatively:

All The Money I Would Have Spent

Porcello there at twenty four

27 mill for Dice-K and for Zito more

But not Porcello, not when he’s in our laps

Not with his consitent heater missing bats

Not with 4 pitches, not this future ace

We like to spend our money from figurative banks

And tell you we tried to get Zito and Dice-K

And throw out the big numbers we would have paid

But when there is no team holding you back

From spending money and drafting impact

You will no more chirp to me

About the money you spend so well, figuratively

Holding credence with all the money you would be paying

Your actions speak so loudly, I can’t hear what your saying.

All in all the draft went well, I just wish it would have been outstanding.  I wish they would of put their money where their mouth is.
